CDs are finding their way back onto peoples' hearts and stereo systems. And don't underestimate how important CDs are for promoting your music. What's the difference between duplication vs replication?

Replication or CD pressing, was the first method invented to produce CDs. Today, replication is used when a publisher wants thousands of copies at a low unit price. CD or DVD replication makes economic sense only when you need 500 or more units. Most of the time, independent music artists tend to order 50 to 200 CDs at a time. In this case, CD/DVD duplication is the way to go. Replicating discs means creating a glass master and molding the discs from melted plastic pellets. First, the glass master is created which holds an image of your music or video. This takes the most time and expense. There are careful and time consuming set up steps and this part of the process costs several hundred dollars just to be ready to create the first disc. Once the master is made and the replication process is started, it goes very fast and the stamped copies are low cost. Because there is a lot of setup for this process (as well as very expensive replication machines) replicated discs only make sense for large quantities (500 to 1000 or more).

CD (or DVD) Duplication is used most often when you need 500 or less discs. This is sometimes referred to as short run duplication or bulk CD copy. There is less setup time and expense which allows for a lower unit cost for smaller quantities. Duplication means CD or DVD copying (burning). It utilizes optical drives to copy your source disc to the blank media. These days, with the advancements of optical CD/DVD drives, 'burned' discs are as good as replicated discs. Replication provides an advantage in lower unit cost only when you create thousands at a time. This is why duplication is usually how CDs or DVDs are created. Our automated duplicators can make just a few copies up to many hundreds. We print with very high quality blank media with a glossy finish that is better looking than most any other disc you'll find. This method is no less reliable than replication.
